Hiroshi Sugimoto

Image
U.A. Play House, New York, 1978 The photographer that I will be writing about is Hiroshi Sugimoto. Sugimoto is very well known f or its architecture and seascapes. The reason I picked these two pieces of his work is due to how simple they are. As someone who is very fond of architecture photography, he has a different eye when it comes to capturing structures.   Speaking of structures, his work on theaters is by far the most interesting set that he has developed. It is simple, but with a sense of loneliness as well. Given that the work is in black and white , the way he captures theaters/ playhouses throughout the world is well compo sed. Always on the same angle but differentiate in many ways based on the theater's surroundings and positioning.   Other work that I found fascinating is his seascapes. Again, simplistic but it makes it seem from the point of view of someone when lookin g at the unknown. It is very mysterious the more I investigate it, like his p...

Abelardo Morell

Image
Abelardo Morell is well known for creating obscure camera images. The process of the obscura camera dates back a long time ago , in which a small hole is created in a bo x or room blocking all other light. The only source of light is from the small hole. It is a fascinating method to capturing light and giving a perspective that is so different. This is where Abelardo Morell’s work comes in.     Abelardo Morell’s work with obscura camera is so unique. He works in illustrating a landscape within a room of, having a sort of indifferent perspective of modern work and nature itself. I enjoy his work, h e creates a camera out of a room where objects are placed and provides a unique scenery, with the upside-down landscape and the emptiness of the room.   The photograph above incorporates the room and the city very nicely. The way the chairs and tabl e   are set up allows for more room for the buildings to stand out within the room . The black and...

Alec Soth

Image
In the field of photography, portraiture has been a way to portray not just yourself but the person being the subject of the photograph. Portraiture is a way to portray one’s life and environment, but also their emotion and expression that they ho ld. Alec Soth, a portraiture photographer, captures an individual and their environment. Alec Soth’s work is by far from what I think, quite simple yet it captures the personality or the story of every person he has taken a picture of.   Alec Soth says that there is a sense of imagery in  every picture he has taken. What he means by this is that for every photo there would always be something to say about it regarding what this person has gone through or what the situation is for this person in the image. It is interesting that every picture of his is just quite a simple portrait of people . Y et , there can be a lot happening by just observing a person’s posture, expression, and environment. How does the photo a...

Conceptualizing Visual Approach Photographer: Bill Armstrong

Image
After Robert Doisneau, The Fall, 2019 When I think about the visual approach in work, I think of a style that sticks with the individual. In photography, one’s visual approach is unique to the individual trying to portray something. Color, angles, shapes, contrast, and other ways can illustrate a subject differently. A notable example of a visual approach comes from the work of Bill Armstrong.   Bill Armstrong’s work is truly fascinating. It heavily relies on color and is out of focus on   the subject and e nvironment . The visual approach that Bill Armstrong works with is blurred focus and color effects. Bill Armstrong primarily works on this since color provides a more lush and semi-abstract while the blurriness gives it a temporal feeling of the moment. This visual approach is very sporadic but does an excellent job of providing a different feeling when looking at his work. What do I think about his work? As seen above, his work on the Falling series is a ...
