Composite Photographer: Joel Grimes

 Composite Photographer: Joel Grimes

Have you ever observed a photograph that is so surreal and unrealistic? If yes, this type of photography is referred to as composite photography. Composites combine two pictures into one photo, commonly done through Photoshop, to create an image that is out of the ordinary. This type of photography is unique, as it works with one’s imagination to create something surreal but captivating. Joel Grimes is one photographer who caught my eye in this type of work, although it is uniquely different.

Joel Grimes work is far different from the whimsical and surreal part of composite photography, as he primarily portrays athletes or people in a background that comes straight out of a movie. Grimes’ work is portraiture but emphasizes their background to make a person drastically stand out. If you think of advertisements for sportswear, it is kind of like that. It is incredible work since it includes an environment that is not there to introduce a person to a different perspective. The photo above is a perfect example, including a background that fits the person’s style and character. Lighting also improves the image; it makes the person stand out with the lighting positioned straight on and within the background. It emphasizes character with the environment placed, which is astounding.
